Athletic, feisty, distinctive - the Golf GTI. Are you ready for this much power?
Naturally, the design of the new Golf GTI is inspired by the world of motorsports. The front, with its even slimmer headlights, the typical honeycomb structure of the radiator grille and the gleaming black air intake vents identify it as a worthy successor to the original GTI. The classic red trim strip extends from the radiator grille, with its GTI lettering, to above the compact headlights, emphasising the dynamic overall look. This impression is further strengthened by the powerful-looking bumpers – a feature unique to the GTI.
The sporty side profile is achieved through the broader side sills, which make the already lower Golf GTI appear to sit even closer to the road, as well as through the GTI lettering and logo on the two front wings.
The rear also draws the eye, with its grained matte black diffuser and chrome exhaust pipes on the right and left, as well as the body-coloured rear spoiler. The darkened LED tail light cluster with running rear indicators and LED reg. plate light, reveal their advantage at night.
The new GTI is in pole position when it comes to atmosphere: even as you open the driver’s door, you will be wowed by the sill panel trim, illuminated in red. As soon as you sit into the height-adjustable sports seats, which are equipped with seat-back pockets and Clark chequered seat covers, you will notice how comfortable you are. You will feel pure performance at your fingertips in the form of the flat-bottomed multifunction sports steering wheel in leather, with GTI inlay and gear knob in the classic golfball design.
As you drive, you will be able to see exactly how your vehicle is performing on the animated, Active Info Display, or enjoy looking at the dash panel with its GTI-specific instruments and the centre console, with its sporty inlays.
The LED headlights make the most of the design of the new Golf GTI. They are energy-efficient and their spectrum, which is similar to daylight, is easier on the eyes. The optional headlight washer system (with washer fluid level warning lamp) also helps ensure you can see clearly at all times.
The integrated dynamic cornering light helps you to recognise obstacles on winding roads. The highlights of the light design also include the darkened LED tail light cluster with running turn signals: an animated strip of lights that indicates the direction in which you are going to turn.
A statement and eye-catcher all in one: as soon you turn the corner with your 18-inch Milton Keynes alloy wheels, all eyes will be on you. The distinctive alloy wheels with their sporty 225/40 R 18 wide-section tyres underline the dynamic GTI feel and express a strong personality. They confidently give the Golf GTI an unmistakeable side profile.
You can also make your Golf even sportier if you wish – by adding, diamond-turned 19-inch Brescia alloy wheels. And if that isn’t eye-catching enough, you can always opt for optional 19-inch Santiago alloy wheels with high-gloss cross-spokes. Both models are made by our exclusive Volkswagen R forge and look very light despite their imposing size. Whichever version you choose, however, the characteristic red brake callipers with GTI lettering will of course always be featured.

Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front is reassuring while driving in traffic. Optional adaptive cruise control helps you to do just that.
ACC measures the proximity and speed of vehicles on the road ahead. In queues and traffic jams, the system combines with the optional DSG dual clutch gearbox to brake your Golf GTI () to a stop and automatically move forward again shortly after.
Sometimes the unexpected happens, and emergency braking is required. In these cases, the optional Front Assist area monitoring system can be useful. Within the system limits, you will receive a warning if the system detects a critical tailgating situation. In particularly critical situations, the system can also assist with braking or can even brake automatically to reduce the impact speed.
The City Emergency Braking system can intervene when you are driving at low speeds in city traffic, while Pedestrian Monitoring can detect, within the limits of the system, if for example a pedestrian steps onto the road suddenly. The assistance system provides relevant warnings, assists with braking or brakes automatically – always within the limits of the system. In the ideal case, this will prevent a collision or at least reduce its severity.
If a car is approaching you from the rear and cannot be seen in your exterior or rear view mirror, it is in the dreaded blind spot. Before changing lanes, the trusty glance over the shoulder helps – and now, so does the optional blind spot sensor. From speeds of 15 km/h, the sensor can warn you by illuminating an LED icon on the exterior mirror of your Golf GTI (). If you still switch on your turn signal, the light begins to flash brighter and more quickly and draw your attention to the vehicle in your blind spot.
In combination with the lane keeping system Lane Assist, the blind spot sensor can even use corrective steering intervention to warn you before you change lanes.
For its part, the Rear Traffic Alert assists you when reversing out of a parking space. Sensors in the rear bumper monitor traffic passing at the rear of the vehicle. If another car, a cyclist or a pedestrian is approaching you from the side, you will be warned by means of an acoustic signal and an indication on the Infotainment system display. If you do not react in time, the system can mitigate or even prevent an imminent collision by effecting a braking intervention.
Simply turn the ignition key and you’ll get goose bumps: the 169 kW (229 HP) two-litre turbo direct petrol injection engine (TSI) will accelerate your Golf GTI from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds at lightning speed and be reminded that driving a car is so much more than just getting from A to B.
To allow you to experience pure driving pleasure, the body of the Golf GTI () has been dropped by 20 millimetres and sports with firmer springs, shock absorbers and stabilisers has been integrated into the vehicle. You will feel the result: handling is noticeably improved, for example on curves, and you get an especially direct driving feel, particularly if you have a sporty driving style. This allows you to get the most out of the power the car offers and still stay in control.
Even a modern sport coupé like the Golf GTI () is tied to its tradition. Sports seats came as standard in the first Golf GTI back in 1976 and featured a red chequered pattern. Today, the fabric seat covers are called Clark covers, are also chequered and are embellished with red decorative stitching.
The front seats have evolved to become height-adjustable premium sports seats which are equipped with lumbar support and seat-back pockets. In keeping with the original, you can still be certain that you are sitting in a vehicle which is synonymous with quality, sportiness and suitability for everyday use. The asymmetrically divided, folding backrests of the rear seat bench are further evidence that this is the case.
Do you want to enjoy every nuance of your music with the purest bass and crystal-clear treble? If so, you should listen to the Dynaudio Excite sound system from Danish hi-fi specialists Dynaudio. Eight speakers specially designed for the interior of your car, a subwoofer and a digital 10-channel amplifier with 400 watts of output play the ideal soundtrack for every journey.
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) adjusts the sound emissions from every speaker according to its position in the car, so that you hear the sound as if you were in the ideal listening position every time. Whether you like your music loud or soft, and whether you prefer rock, electronic or classical tunes, you will end your journey more relaxed than you were at the start.
An elegant solution: the optional Vienna leather equipment creates a comfortable atmosphere in your vehicle interior. This natural material comes in black with perforations revealing the contrasting colour Flash Red.
The perforated leather adorns the centre sections of the seats and the insides of the seat bolsters on both sports comfort seats in the front. These can not only be adjusted in terms of height and lumbar support, but are also heated and provide firm support and pleasant comfort. The driver’s seat is also available in an electrically adjusted version. The drawers under the front seats are also practical.
Thanks to the optional Active Info Display, you can enjoy the advantages of an instrument cluster with a high-resolution 31 cm (12.3-inch) colour display. With various information profiles, you can decide which specific data are displayed in the instrument cluster in addition to the usual gauges such as the rev counter, speedometer and odometer.
You can select this information profile quickly and easily using the optional multifunction steering wheel: depending on your precise needs, you can access detailed Driving Data, for example, or show a visual display of your driver assistance systems. This means the display area can be even better used, because you can also show additional data within the tubes.
In the Discover Media Infotainment system, you can decide whether you would like to see the navigation map in the Active Info Display, or have the classic view on the system display. With Discover Pro, both display options are available simultaneously.
